The species has an elongate, cylindrical body with a lizard-like head and a wide mouth full of small, sharp teeth. The sandy-brown, blotchy colour provides camouflage on the bottom. The fish reaches about 32 cm and is common on sand and silt bottoms of shallow lagoons, reef flats and sheltered seaward reefs. As an ambush predator it lies half-buried in wait and lunges suddenly at passing fishes and invertebrates. The species is caught and eaten locally.
