Terms of Use

1. Applicability

These terms apply to the use of the Fin's Fish Guide website (finsfishguide.com) and the Fin's Fish Guide app (available for iOS, Android and web), together "the service". By using the service you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. The service

Fin's Fish Guide provides information about fish species and a feature to identify fish from a photo or description. The service is free. We may change, extend, limit or discontinue the service at any time.

3. No guarantee of accuracy — important

The information in the service is carefully compiled from external sources (such as FishBase, GBIF and iNaturalist) and the identification uses AI. Both can contain errors. An identification is an estimate, not an established fact.

Never rely solely on the service for decisions about safety or health. This applies in particular to whether a fish is edible, venomous or dangerous. When in doubt, always consult an expert. Use of the information in the service is entirely at your own risk.

4. Your own responsibility

You are responsible for complying with local laws and regulations, such as fishing licences, closed seasons, minimum sizes and protected species. The service is not a substitute for official regulations.

5. Your content

Photos and descriptions you submit remain yours. You grant us permission to process them to the extent needed to provide and improve the service. You warrant that you have the right to use the content you submit.

6. Acceptable use

You will not use the service to break the law, disrupt or overload the service, copy data in an automated and large-scale way (scraping), or imitate or reverse-engineer the service.

7. Intellectual property

The service, including the name Fin's Fish Guide, the mascot Fin and our own texts and design, is our property. Species data and photos partly originate from third parties and are covered by their own licences (such as FishBase under CC-BY-NC and photos under the licence of the photographer concerned).

8. Liability

The service is provided "as is", without any warranty as to accuracy, completeness or availability. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any damage arising from the use of the service, including damage caused by incorrect information or incorrect identifications, and indirect or consequential damage.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The current version is always available on this page. If you continue to use the service after a change, you agree to the new terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by Dutch law. Disputes will be submitted to the competent court in the Netherlands.
