Description
The blind swamp eel is a blind swamp eel (Synbranchidae) endemic to the underground waters and cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The species grows to about 30 cm and has an eel-like, almost pigmentless, pinkish-white body without pectoral fins and with strongly reduced eyes hidden under the skin. Adapted to life in total darkness it probes cave streams for small invertebrates. The fish is harmless to humans.
