Description

The linear carp is a rare form of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) with a single continuous row of large scales along the lateral line, from gill cover to tail; the rest of the body is almost bare apart from a few scales near the dorsal fin and head. Genetically it carries the dominant N allele alongside an S allele. That N allele is lethal in a double dose and lowers viability even in a single dose, one of the reasons linear carp are scarce. In habits, diet and size it does not differ from other carp; anglers sometimes confuse it with a mirror carp that has a regular row of scales.
