Description
The splendid perch is a colourful perch-like fish of the family Callanthiidae from the temperate waters around southern Australia. The species grows to about 49 cm and has a streamlined, pink to yellow-red body with yellow tints and elongated tail-fin tips. It is a schooling species that swims above rocky reefs and crevices by day and seeks shelter in caves and gullies at night. As a plankton feeder it feeds on zooplankton picked from the water column. Owing to its deeper occurrence on the continental shelf it is mainly seen by divers and as bycatch. The species is harmless to humans.
