Description
The splendid perch is a colourful fish of the family Callanthiidae from the southeastern Atlantic, along southern Africa (Namibia to Natal). The species reaches about 25 cm and has an oblong, bright red-orange to yellowish body with elongated caudal-fin tips. It lives demersally to benthopelagically over the continental shelf and slope, at depths of about 50 to 200 m. The diet consists of zooplankton and small invertebrates. The species is occasionally caught as bycatch in trawls. Owing to its life at some depth it is not often seen up close.
