Description
Synodontis irsacae is a squeaker catfish of the family Mochokidae from East Africa, occurring in Lake Tanganyika. The species reaches about 16 cm and has a stocky, brown mottled body with barbels. It lives from the littoral to the benthic zone, over shell, sand and mud bottoms, to about 40 m deep. As an omnivore it feeds on algae, sponges, ostracods, small crabs, insect larvae and fish eggs. The pectoral and dorsal fin spines can be locked and cause painful puncture wounds when handled. It is a typical inhabitant of the species-rich Lake Tanganyika.
