Description
The soft alfonsino is a deep-sea fish from the Indo-West and adjacent Pacific. The species grows to about 30 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, red body with very large eyes, adapted to the dim light of the deep. As a near-bottom fish it lives over the continental slope and seamounts, between about 100 and 500 metres, often in schools, and feeds on small fish, crustaceans and squid. Related alfonsinos are a valued deep-sea food fish. The IUCN has not evaluated the species.
