Description
The Fueguian notothen is a small notothenioid fish of the family Nototheniidae from the cold waters around southern South America and the Falkland Islands. The species grows to about 11 cm and has a stocky, brownish mottled body, adapted to life on rocky and weedy bottoms of shallow coastal waters. As a bottom dweller it feeds on small crustaceans, worms, molluscs and algae. Notothenioids dominate the fish community of the cold southern waters and some possess antifreeze substances in the blood. The species is an important prey fish and is harmless to humans.
