Description

The yellowfin notothen is a notothen (Nototheniidae) from the cold waters around Antarctica and the subantarctic islands. The species has a stocky body with a large head and, as the name indicates, yellowish fins. Like other notothens it is adapted to icy water; its blood contains antifreeze compounds and it lacks a swim bladder, so it lives largely on the bottom. It inhabits rocky and soft bottoms of the coastal zone and continental shelf, where it forages on small crustaceans and invertebrates. The species is harmless to humans.
