Description

The Thys' electric catfish is an electric catfish (Malapteruridae) from slow-flowing and still fresh water of West Africa. The species grows to about 30 cm and has a thick, cylindrical, scaleless, grey-brown body with three pairs of barbels and a far-set adipose fin. Beneath the skin it carries a powerful electric organ with which it delivers a strong jolt to stun prey and defend itself. As a nocturnal predator it hunts small fish and crustaceans.
