Dories are tall, strongly flattened marine fish with a remarkably protrusible mouth that sucks in prey fish in a single motion. The well-known John Dory carries a large dark spot on each flank — said to be the thumbprint of Saint Peter. They swim slowly, moving mainly by undulating the dorsal and anal fins. Seen head-on they are wafer-thin, which makes them hard for prey to spot. They are prized, tasty fish that often live alone over deeper bottoms.
