Description
The sailfin velifer is an unusual, sailfin-bearing fish (Veliferidae) from coastal waters of the Indo-West Pacific. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with sometimes faint dark bars and very tall, sail-like dorsal and anal fins that it can fold down. As a swimmer in open coastal water it snaps at small zooplankton and small invertebrates. The fish is harmless to humans.
