Description

The chambo tilapia is a tilapiine cichlid (Cichlidae) endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 30 cm and has a deep, grey-green body with a small mouth. As a herbivore and detritus feeder it grazes on algae, plankton and organic matter above sand and mud. The female broods the eggs and young in her mouth. It is an important but threatened commercial food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
