Description
The banded cichlid, known in the aquarium hobby as the severum, is a cichlid of northern South America. The species reaches about 20 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, green to yellow-brown body that as a juvenile bears several dark crossbars. It inhabits quiet, soft black- and whitewater rivers of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Its diet consists of plant matter, algae, small invertebrates and detritus. As a substrate spawner the species lays its eggs on a firm surface and both parents guard the brood. It is a popular aquarium fish and is harmless to humans.
