Description

The severum is a deep, laterally compressed cichlid from the Amazon basin in South America. The species grows to about 17 cm and has a disc-shaped, green-yellow to brownish body; juveniles show dark cross-bars that largely disappear in adults. It lives in calm, plant-rich rivers and flooded forests and eats plant matter, fruit, algae and small invertebrates. It is a popular aquarium fish. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern (LC).
