Description

The roughneck grunt is a grunt from the western Atlantic, along the coasts of Central and South America. The species grows to about 25 cm and has a streamlined, silvery body with fine golden longitudinal lines. Grunts owe their name to the grunting sound they make by rubbing their throat teeth. As a near-bottom fish it lives over sand and mud bottoms of coastal water and hunts small crustaceans and worms. It is a local food fish. The IUCN assesses the species as Least Concern (LC).
