Description
The redfin distichodus is a deep, silvery characin of the family Distichodontidae reaching about 20 cm. The laterally compressed body has red-orange fins, an adipose fin (as in many characins) and a small, somewhat projecting mouth with which the fish grazes plants and growth. The species comes from West and Central Africa and lives in schools in slow water of rivers, creeks and swamps with abundant water plants. It is mainly a plant-eater, feeding on water plants, algae and growth, supplemented with small invertebrates. In the rainy season it spawns among the plants. For its handsome colours it is popular in the aquarium hobby, and locally it is a valued small food fish.
