Description
The manyband darter tetra is a small, elongate bottom fish of the family Distichodontidae from Africa. The species grows to only about 6 cm and has an elongate body with numerous dark crossbars, a pattern that provides camouflage among vegetation and bottom material. It prefers vegetated river margins, oxbow lagoons and shallow lakes, and picks small invertebrates and epiphyton from stems and roots with its downward-facing mouth. The species breeds in summer and makes seasonal movements onto floodplains in the rainy season. It is a peaceful bottom dweller and harmless to humans.
