Description

The highbody distichodus is an African characin of the family Distichodontidae from the Congo basin. The species has a deep, laterally compressed body with a small head and a blunt snout, and grows to about 15 cm. It lives in rivers and floodplains, often among water plants. As a predominantly herbivorous fish it grazes water plants, algae and other plant matter, supplemented with some invertebrates. Juveniles, with their attractive markings, are popular in the aquarium hobby. The species is harmless to humans.
