Description

The blackspot callochromis is a cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a streamlined, silvery body; courting males show brighter colours and a dark blotch on the flank. It lives over sandy bottoms near rocks, where it occurs in schools. With its mouth it sifts sand to extract small invertebrates. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder; courting males dig shallow spawning pits in the sand. The blackspot callochromis is popular in the aquarium. Owing to its habits it is harmless to humans.
