Palingen en murenes zijn slangvormige vissen met een lang, buigzaam lichaam en een doorlopende zoom van rug-, staart- en aarsvin, zonder buikvinnen. Hun huid voelt glad en slijmerig aan en schubben zijn klein of afwezig. Veel soorten schuilen overdag in holen en spleten en jagen ’s nachts op vis en kreeftachtigen. De Europese paling maakt een indrukwekkende trek naar de Sargassozee om te paaien, terwijl murenes juist echte rifbewoners zijn. Van zoetwaterpaling tot zeepaling en congeraal: het is een verrassend diverse groep.
