Steindachner's cichlid is a cichlid (Cichlidae) from rivers, streams and spring pools of northeastern Mexico in Central America. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a deep, grey-brown body with dark crossbars and pearly speckles. As a territorial bottom-dweller it searches among stones for snails, insect larvae and small invertebrates. It is a caring parental brooder. The fish is harmless to humans.
