Description

The conophoros utaka is a utaka cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. The species grows to about 12 cm and has an elongate, silver-blue body; courting males colour up vividly with blue and yellow tints and build a cone-shaped sand nest (bower) on the bottom. As a plankton feeder it hovers in schools above the sand near rocks and snaps at small zooplankton. It is a mouthbrooder. The fish is harmless to humans.
