Description

The dikume is a cichlid endemic to crater lake Barombi Mbo in Cameroon, West Africa. The species grows to about 12 cm and has a stocky, dark body. Remarkably it can live in the oxygen-poor deeper water of the crater lake thanks to a high level of red blood pigment; it feeds mainly on midge larvae from the deep water. It is a mouthbrooder. Through its extremely small habitat the species is endangered. The fish is harmless to humans.
