The humphead Madagascar cichlid is a cichlid endemic to the Nosivolo River in eastern Madagascar. It grows to about 13 cm and has a golden-brown body with two broad black cross-bars on the flank. It lives in rivers with sand and gravel bottoms and scattered boulders. As a Malagasy cichlid the species holds a distinct place within the island's threatened freshwater fish fauna.
