Description
The humphead Madagascar cichlid is a cichlid endemic to the Nosivolo River in eastern Madagascar. It grows to about 13 cm and has a golden-brown body with two broad black cross-bars on the flank. It lives in rivers with sand and gravel bottoms and scattered boulders. As a Malagasy cichlid the species holds a distinct place within the island's threatened freshwater fish fauna. Because of habitat loss and the decline of its range it is listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. The fish is harmless to humans.
