Description

The black deepsea scorpionfish is a deep-sea scorpionfish (Setarchidae) from the dim midwater of the ocean. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a stocky, black-brown body with a large, spiny head and large eyes. Unlike its reef relatives it hovers in the open deep water and hunts small fish and crustaceans. The dorsal and gill-cover spines are venomous and can give a painful puncture wound when handled.
