Description

The Hein's darter tetra is a small characin (Crenuchidae) from clear streams and rivers of the Orinoco basin in South America. The species grows to about 6 cm and has a slender, streamlined, sandy body with dark spots and usually lacks the adipose fin. As a bottom-dweller it often rests propped on its pectoral fins on sand and gravel and darts forward in short hops, like a darter; it snaps at small invertebrates, insect larvae and algae. The fish is harmless to humans.
