Description
Callichthys callichthys, the cascarudo, is a South American armoured catfish of the family Callichthyidae. The body is covered with two rows of overlapping bony plates and the species bears barbels around the mouth; it reaches about 21 cm. The fish lives in very diverse, often extreme habitats, from anoxic, densely vegetated still-water zones to slightly turbid streams, and can take up air through intestinal breathing. When the water dries up the species can move overland to another pool. At night it feeds on fish, insects and plant matter. The male builds a bubble nest for the eggs.
