Description

The olive barb is a cyprinid (Cyprinidae) from South Asia. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a streamlined, silvery to olive body with barbels. Adults inhabit rivers, streams, lakes and backwaters and tolerate varying salinity. They live in schools of a few to many individuals. As an omnivore it feeds on insects, small invertebrates, algae, plant matter and detritus. It is a valued food fish. The species is harmless to humans.
