Description
The marbled flathead is a flathead (Platycephalidae) from the western Pacific. The species has a strongly flattened head and an elongate body with a mottled pattern that makes it nearly invisible half-buried on the bottom. It lives bottom-bound on the continental shelf in coastal waters. As an ambush hunter it waits for small fishes and crustaceans. The sharp spines on the gill cover can cause cuts when handled.
