The Slender Searobin (Peristedion gracile) is a saltwater fish of the family Peristediidae that grows up to 20 cm.
Description
The slender searobin is a bottom fish of the armored searobin family (Peristediidae) from the western Atlantic. The species grows to about 20 cm and has an elongate body armoured with bony plates, a pair of long projections on the snout and, under the chin, a bundle of barbel-like appendages with which it probes the bottom. It lives mostly on the continental slope. Unlike some related spiny fishes this species has no venom gland or venom groove. As a bottom searcher it feeds on small benthic invertebrates. Owing to its deep habits the species is rarely seen and is harmless to humans.
