Description

The blue nothobranch is a seasonal killifish (Nothobranchiidae) from East Africa. The species is small; males are handsomely blue-coloured with reddish fin margins. It lives in small pools and swamps of floodplains and stays just below the water surface. It is a typical annual killifish: the adults die when their pool dries out, while the eggs laid on the bottom go through a dry resting phase of several months and hatch only when the rains refill the pool. It feeds on small zooplankton and insect larvae. The species is harmless to humans.
