Description

The Walvis pearlside is a pearlside (Sternoptychidae) from the dim midwater of the southeast Atlantic, off southern Africa. The species grows to about 5 cm and has a slender, laterally compressed, silvery body with large eyes and rows of light-producing organs on the belly, with which it blends against the faint light from above. As a schooling fish it rises at night to snap small zooplankton and descends by day. The fish is harmless to humans.
