Description

The Creole topminnow is a livebearing toothcarp (Poeciliidae) endemic to Cuba. The species is small; males are smaller and possess an anal fin modified into a mating organ (gonopodium). Unlike egg-laying fishes the female gives birth to live young. It inhabits pools and shore zones of clear, cool, well-oxygenated mountain streams. At and near the surface it feeds on small invertebrates, insect larvae and algae. The species is harmless to humans.
