Description
The Marico barb is a small African cyprinid from southern Africa. The species grows to about 8 cm and has a slender, silvery body. It inhabits clear brooks and small rivers and is a typical forage fish that stays in schools. As an omnivore it feeds on small invertebrates, algae and detritus. Owing to a restricted range and threats to its habitat, such as water abstraction and pollution, the species is listed as Near Threatened (NT). As a small schooling fish it is an important link in the food web and is harmless to humans.
