Description

The lofty triplefin is a very small bottom fish of the triplefin family (Tripterygiidae) of the western Atlantic and Caribbean. The species reaches only about 4 cm and takes its name from the three separate dorsal fins characteristic of this family. It lives on and around coral reefs and rocky shores in clear water, where it shelters among stones and algae. As a bottom hunter it feeds on small invertebrates. Its hemispherical eggs are anchored with sticky threads in the algae of the nesting site. The species is harmless to humans.
