Description

The bigmouth sanddab is a small left-eyed flatfish of the family Paralichthyidae found in the tropical eastern Pacific from Mexico to Peru. Reaching about 20 cm, it has both eyes on the left side of the body and a notably large mouth. The sandy-brown, mottled upper side provides camouflage on the sand and mud bottoms of shallow coastal waters and estuaries. A bottom dweller, it often lies partly buried and ambushes small crustaceans, worms and fishes. It is harmless to humans and only rarely taken for food.
