Description

The red whalefish is a deep-sea fish and the only species of the family Barbourisiidae. The species has a soft, orange-red body covered with numerous small, velvety spinules, and a large mouth. Juveniles live mesopelagically, while adults occur benthopelagically near the deep-sea bottom. It presumably feeds on crustaceans. Owing to the great depth at which it lives, the species is rarely observed. It is harmless to humans.
